BRUSSELS EVENT: SPECIAL BRIEFING EU-AUSTRALIA FTA

5 July 2019

Yesterday in Brussels Australia’s chief negotiator for the EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement, Alison Burrows, delivered a Special Briefing on the status of the negotiations to members of the organisations that comprise the ABIE network.

The event was organized by ABIE in association with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia (DFAT) and sponsored by H&H Group, Swisse. Ms Burrows gave an update on key topics including labour mobility, trade in goods and services, e-commerce and digital trade, technical barriers to trade, intellectual property and energy and raw materials.

The Q&A session provided the opportunity for attendees from both Australian and European business and government tell their stories and pose questions regarding the barriers to facilitating business between the two regions.

The roundtable discussion was led by Jason Collins, CEO, European Australian Business Council and included Dan Tebbutt, GM, Austrade Europe and HE Mr Justin Brown PSM, Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union and NATO.

Ambassador Brown praised the active role that ABIE had taken in engaging and informing the membership of its participating organisations in the topics and challenges of the FTA. He called for business to advocate for contemporary Australia and it’s market opportunities, to counter any current misunderstandings that exist within European society and industry.

The event was the culmination of a series of regional FTA-focused events organized by ABIE organisations across Europe. Alongside the event, ABIE also made a joint submission to the DFAT prior to Round 4 sharing experiences and concerns of industry.

Round 4 of the negotiations were taking place in Brussels this week, 1-5 July, having been launched in June 2018. The 5th round will be held in October 2019 with ongoing intersessional videoconferences on a range of issues before then.
